Sam specialises in all areas of family law ranging from simple parenting disputes, to large and complex financial cases.  Sam has particular experience and an interest in:

• Complex financial cases involving large family businesses and/or farms, third parties, taxation issues and/or international aspects; and

• Cases involving relocation of children, whether internationally, inter-state, or intra-state.

Sam was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2007 where he practiced for one year primarily in the areas of Family Law, Tax and Commercial Litigation.  At the end of 2007 the partner who Sam primarily worked under was appointed as a Judge of the Family Court of New Zealand, and in early 2008 Sam relocated to Perth.

On arrival in Perth in 2008 Sam chose to specialise in family law.  He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Western Australia, and the High Court of Australia.  He spent three and a half years working closely with one of Perth’s most prominent Senior Counsel on a number of complex financial matters.

Over the next decade Sam worked at two other well respected family law firms in Perth as a senior associate then as a principal, before starting FMD with Nic and Kay in 2018. 

While Sam is steadfastly focussed on resolving matters without the need for a trial, he has been involved in a number of significant cases before the Family Court, and he Full Court of the Family Court and the Supreme Court of Western Australia.  

Sam became an Accredited Family Law Specialist at the end of 2013.  He then completed a Masters of Law (Family Law) at the end of 2014.

In each year since 2017 Sam has been named by Doyle’s Guide as one of Western Australia’s Leading Family Lawyers.  He has been particularly recommended in the ‘High Value and Complex Property’ category in each year since 2018.  

Sam has been an active member of the Family Law Practitioners Association of Western Australia for a number of years, including as a member of Council in 2013/2014 and 2017/2018.  He is also a qualified collaborative lawyer, a member of the Tax Institute of Australia, and an active member of the Law Society of Western Australia, including on the Family Law Specialist Accreditation Committee.  

Sam prides himself on taking a commercial and ‘solutions focussed’ approach. He works with clients to identify what they want to achieve, and to put in place a strategy to achieve this. Sam is committed to ‘thinking outside the box’ to resolve disputes in a way that is pragmatic and cost proportionate.
